Water Flames – Vermillion II

Mineral Pigments, Gold powder on Kumohada Paper
48 x 60 inches

Water Flames began as a series of meditations on the sanctifying presence within flames. In Nihonga, a traditional water-based Japanese technique using mineral pigments, the gold applied on paper naturally created watermarks often resembling flames.

The paradoxical nature of depicting flames with water is a metaphor of life, akin to giving birth, which has significant overlaps with 21 Grams' message connecting winemaking with the weight of our souls.
