Water Stones III
Oxidized Malachite, Mica on Kumohada, 64 x 68 inches
Water Stones III was done as part of my exhibit focusing on the use of malachite and mineral pigments with Kumohada Japanese paper to create spontaneous, improvised marks. These improvised paintings are done in conjunction with a larger collaboration, often done live to avant-garde jazz music. A recent Plywood Film documentary, Live in New York: Susie Ibarra & Makoto Fujimura, traces the productions of similar paintings. The collaborative nature of the piece lends itself well to the 21 Grams project, as my art overlaps with the process of winemaking. The refraction of the pigments, the subtle movements, and jazz-like quality of the surface all illumine the quality of the wine created for the 2007 21 Grams.
